The Department of Mathematics started in 1956 and upgraded to postgraduate status in 1959. It is one of the most prestigious departments in terms of acclaimed faculty and academic achievements.

The department was awarded the status of a Research Centre in the year 2012. Majority of the teachers are PhD holders and eminent mathematicians in the state.

On the academic front this department has done wonders by producing 36 rank holders and 43 successful candidates in the national level (NET/JRF) examinations of the UGC.
