The PG department of Social work was established in 2003. Within a very short span of time this department established a healthy and fruitful relation with a large number of social organisations within and outside Kerala to meet the field work requirements of the course and to provide the students with a practice base for the development of appropriate skills, aptitude and knowledge.
The areas of specialisation of the MSW course offers are (1) Community development (2) Medical and psychiatric social work and, (3) Family and child welfare. The department has been organizing various developmental and educational programmes. Some of them are a series of workshops on topics like transactional analysis, participatory rural appraisal, project preparation, gender sensitivity etc. It also organises rural camps and awareness campaigns and numerous seminars on relevant topics. Also the department extends consultancy and training service to local bodies, NGOs and government departments, the thrust areas being skill enhancement, empowerment of women and marginalised groups, and offers counselling service to various categories of clients including students.
Of the many seminars the department has conducted so far, the two national seminars in the Collabre series deserve special mention for their super planning and impeccable execution.
Department also maintains excellent academic ambience which is very much reflected in the PG results and also the pass percentage in National Level examinations. It has so far produced 28 UGC-NET/JRF winners and many University Rank Holders.
